"I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith." 2 Timothy 4:7

A message from Secretary Gregg Marcantel on the passing of our dear friend Joni Brown:

With a heavy heart this morning I must inform you of the passing of our beloved friend and leader Deputy Director Joni Brown.  Joni was relieved of the burden and pain of her illness last night, peacefully with her family.  Thinking quietly of her passing this morning, I’m struck by the reality that some people watch others make a difference in this world, while others simply assure it happens.  Without a doubt, Joni constantly committed the blessings of her time and talent in life toward making a difference in the lives of so many others, to include those in the world that others had the luxury of discarding.

As I travel around our state and speak to folks in our community who don’t quite understand what you do, I’m constantly and very proudly testifying about the quality of men and women within our ranks…professionals just like Joni.  Her life and character…Joni's unselfish commitment to others…has (and will continue to) embody why I am so grateful to serve you each and do so.  Who she has been (and shall be in our memories) will remain a true credit to our organization, our profession, our state, and us each as individuals.

While her time with us was far too short, as we prepare to bid her physical presence farewell, let’s pause to also remember that for everyone of us, there is nothing more certain than our own passing…and nothing more uncertain than the time it will happen.  As we consider her departure this morning, let’s also be reminded of how important our current lives and service are…how we must each assure that we are also prepared at all times for that which may come…at anytime.  Accordingly, my prayer will be that we will each seek to live in such a way that people should miss us the way will miss Joni.  We will assure you are updated on the services to follow.

As always, God bless you each.  Please always remain safe and intentional with your own lives.

Semper Fi,

Gregg Marcantel
Cabinet Secretary
New Mexico Corrections Department

  1. I am a big fan of MSNBC Lockup, and I saw Joni Brown in the PNM episodes of Lockup. I had no idea that she died until I saw this posting.
